Litchfield County Barn
Trillium was engaged to rehabilitate this group of barns in Litchfield County. Originally comprising three connected structures Trillium was able to create a weekend retreat for their clients. The apartment is flanked by a carriage barn turned lounge & double offices on one side and a party barn, with ample storage below, in the other adjacent larger structure.
The original footprint, foundations, & framing were maintained throughout. We designed a high-performance envelope using proper air-sealing techniques for water, air, vapor, & thermal management. In-board dense-packed cellulose was coupled with continuous exterior insulation, the latter or which mitigates thermal bridging through the studs. Lunos e2 heat recovery ventilators provide efficient fresh air exchange without loss of thermal energy in the conditioned interior spaces.
The exteriors of all three buildings were clad in reclaimed barn boards. Smart interior spaces can easily be adapted to additional guest quarters as needed, and the design of a Jefferson staircase built into new millwork provides access between floors in a tight space with storage beneath and the stair landing flowing smoothly into the back of the banquette at the dining area
