What is a Green Home (Part 3) | Elizabeth Explains

Some people might be confused as to what having a “green home” actually means, interchanging terms like “sustainable,” “energy efficient” and “net-zero.”

In our latest video, Elizabeth DiSalvo, founder of Trillium Architects, explains that it can be “all of the above.” DiSalvo walks us through six important concepts that Trillium adheres to in designing and building a “green” home:

1. It all begins with the house’s envelope which provides superior insulation.

2. Advanced highly energy efficient HVAC equipment along with the tight envelope provides maximum control of air temperature and moisture.

3. The indoor air is healthy and free of dust and allergens.

4. Most of the materials used are natural and plant-based, eliminating exposure to dangerous toxins.

5. The materials are chosen to be low maintenance which means you can go 15-20 years with painting, staining, cleaning or replacing.

6. The resulting home is net-zero ready, meaning that if you choose to install solar panels your electrical bill can be as low as $18 per month.
