Our clients wanted a weekend retreat and found three connected barns in Litchfield, County, CT -  all in need of renovation. The original footprint, foundations, and framing were maintained. while we designed a high-performance building envelope using proper air-sealing techniques for water, air, vapor, and thermal management. In-board, dense-packed cellulose was coupled with continuous exterior insulation, the latter or which mitigates thermal bridging through the studs. Lunos e2 heat recovery ventilators provide efficient fresh air exchange without loss of thermal energy in the conditioned interior spaces.

The exteriors of all three buildings were clad in reclaimed barn boards. Smart interior spaces can easily be adapted to additional guest quarters as needed, and the design of a Jefferson staircase built into new millwork provides access between floors in a tight space.
